Amsterdam for the Non-Smoker

Amsterdam is such an unique city; definitely one that is misunderstood by most in the Western world.  Many children growing up in America come to associate it mainly with “legal marijuana” and “coffee shops”.  College-aged kids have been known to travel to Amsterdam just for the sake of smoking weed legally.  While coffee shops undoubtedly have their place in Amsterdam’s culture, there is SO much more to the city.

One of the most popular places to visit in Amsterdam is the Anne Frank House.  Anne Frank’s story is well-known – a young Jewish girl hiding out with her family during the Nazi invasion in World War 2, chronicling her daily life.  Her story ended tragically when the Nazis found her family’s hiding spot just mere months before the war ended, and she perished in a concentration camp.  The Anne Frank House is a truly touching memorial to this sweet, heroic girl.  The inside of the house is well-organized and takes a couple of hours to sift through.  There are many spots in the house to stop and listen  to audio for a few minutes at a time.  The Anne Frank House is truly one of the “can’t miss” places if you are in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is home to two world-class museums – the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum.  The Van Gogh Museum showcases more than 200 paintings and 600 drawings from the famous Dutch artist.    It is a wonderful place to get lost in for a few hours, for both the casual observer and the art buff.  Because of its popularity there are often long lines, so be sure to purchase tickets ahead of time or arrive early in the day.  The Rijksmuseum is a national museum chalk-full of amazing paintings and artifacts.  Rembrandt and Vermeer are a couple of the artists whose masterpieces will keep you occupied for hours and hours.   An audio tour is recommended to get in-depth with a good number of the exhibits.  One negative about both of these museums is that you are not allowed to take pictures, which is completely understandable with the historic artwork on display.

A great experience and lovely way to see the city is by canal tours.  Canal tours are incredibly easy to go on;  nearly all of them take off from in front of the train station, and leave quite frequently, so just heading to the area and checking out the tours is the way to go.  They are all quite similar – affordable, comfortable, and great sightseeing.  There is really no better way to see the city than cruising down the canals.

For lovers of the outdoors, a trip to the Flower Market will be an unforgettable experience.  This unique market is home to hundreds of different flowers.  Bulbs are also a major hit, because tourists are able to take them back home and plant them.  The Flower Market is a great place to pick up a little gift for your loved one if they couldn’t accompany you on your travels.  In December, the market sells Christmas trees as well.

As you can see, there is so much more to Amsterdam outside of the coffee shops.  The smoking aspect is such a small part of the city that is really is a shame that it frequently overshadows everything else the city brings to the table.  It is about time that this wonderful city started getting some recognition for what is really great about it – its beauty, arts, and people.

Cost of Living in Argentina

Living in Argentina is the dream of many people who want to travel and live somewhere outside the home country.  It is one of the most popular places in Latin America, and a top-spot for starting one’s travels throughout South America.  Most people travelling through South America are doing so on a budget, so it’s important to know what you’re going to spend when travelling here.  Read on to find out the different costs.

Also, it is important to know that in Argentina, they have had a yearly inflation rate of about 25%.  This means every year, the cost of living in Argentina is increasing by 25%.  Luckily, the peso is also devaluing against the American dollar, so prices are only increasing marginally every year.   Quoted below are prices in American dollars.

The biggest costs you will have to make will be with transportation and with lodging.  In Argentina, transportation is very expensive, mainly because it is a huge country.  Going from the north tip to the south would take about 48 hours in a bus, and 5 hours in a plane.  You can plan on about $100 per hour plane ride.  For a bus ride, it costs about $20 per hour.  For example, a 4 hour ride from Buenos Aires to Rosario, a 4 hour trip, costs about $50 (each way).  A flight, from Buenos Aires to Rosario, is about 1.5 hours, and costs about $150.

For lodging, most people will be staying in hostels.  These cost about $10 – $15 dollars per night in a dorm style room.  Private rooms are a lot more, about $65 per room.  These are slightly higher in the south, and cheaper in the north.  Budget hotels are about $70 per night, mid-range is about $100, and nice boutique hotels are around $150 and up.   A luxury room will easily cost you over $200.

Food costs can vary significantly.  A cheap take-out meal will cost around $4-$7.  A cheap restaurant meal somewhere around $10.  A decent restaurant somewhere around $20 and up.  A really nice meal, with wine, and three-courses, will probably cost $40-$50.

Going out is also rather expensive, especially in Buenos Aires.   Entrance fees can cost up to $20 for clubs.  Cocktails are usuall about $5-$8, and a beer around $4.

Of course, like all countries,  there are many ways to save money in Argentina, helping to decrease these stated costs.  Look online for cheap hotels in Buenos Aires, or cheap plane/bus tickets, or browse the various blogs with travel tips.

Download Garmin Nuvi Map Updates Before Driving In Asia

Many Americans and people from Europe are now taking extended travel breaks in Asia in countries such as India and Thailand.  Once there a lot of them decide to hire a car so that they can see more of the country at their own leisure.  However, driving in Asia can be quite a daunting experience for Westerners as the driving culture and styles can be so radically different – and very often scary.

This is where owning a Garmin Nuvi GPS can come in handy because it frees you up from the hassles of using a paper map and will also give you plenty of advance warning of not only what lane to be in, but also include Points of Interest POI files on tourist attractions and things to see.

If you own a Garmin Nuvi or are planning on buying one then the chances are it will not have Asian maps pre-loaded onto it, so you are going to need to purchase some Garmin Nuvi Map Updates to suit the countries you plan on driving in.  Listed below are the various Garmin options and then details on how much you will need to pay.

Crewing On A Yacht Is A Way To See The World

It seems it is harder today than any time in history to travel the world by doing odd jobs here and there. Many countries have tightened up their visa regulations; for tax purposes many places refuse to take on casual labor; worries of terrorism have made people suspicious of foreigners; and the global financial crisis has removed millions of jobs from the world economy. The chances of hitch hiking and busking around the world are getting slimmer and slimmer.

So how can a young person have the adventure of a lifetime on very limited funds? One of the answers is to get a job crewing on a yacht or on a river cruise boat. It is a small niche that has survived the recent economic turbulence. There are still plenty of rich people with yachts who need a crew to take their boat across the world so they can enjoy a holiday in such places as the Caribbean or the South Pacific.

There are a few websites that you can look at to find a job. They often require people with sailing experience. The alternative is to get down to your local marina or port and try to meet yacht captains and owners. If you can impress upon them that you are keen, enthusiastic and reliable you might just land a job on a yacht as a last minute fill in.

Without sailing experience there are two jobs available to you: deckhand or steward/stewardess. The former requires you to clean and maintain the yacht; the later for you to serve the passengers on the yacht. If you have chef experience you might get a chef job. The pay is not great but you will be on your way – traveling for free. And of course at the destination port you will be a sailor with experience.

Alternatively, if you can bar tend, speak a foreign language or play a musical instrument you might be able to get on a river cruise. The advantage of river cruise jobs is that there is less seasickness and that you make land more often.

So don’t be disheartened by your lack of money and the size of the world. If you want to have an adventure start finding out about crewing jobs.

Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii

Similar to El Reserva Natural El Pico, the Natural Park in San Andres, the Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii is one of the main tourist attractions around the island.

The focal point of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the Kilauea Crater, believed to be the current home of the mythological Pele, goddess of the volcanoes. She supposedly appears as a maiden or crone, depending on her whim, but always in a red dress just before an eruption, which she causes when angry. She must be short tempered as Kilauea alone has erupted more than 30 times in the past 25 years. The crater is two and a half miles long and two miles wide, comprising about 2,600 acres. It is 4,077 feet above the sea level and 20,000 feet from the ocean floor. Neighboring Mauna Loa is 13,677 feet above the sea level and 30,000 feet from the ocean floor, being taller than the highest peak in the world – Mount Everest.

Compare to California’s Mount Shasta, with bulk of about 80 cubic miles, Mauna Loa’s bulk is about 10,000 cubic miles. Even when Kilauea is not erupting, there are reminders that it is not at rest. Steam and sulphur vents are everywhere in the crater and on surrounding bluffs. A walk along Devastation Trail reveals a surrealistic landscape of this natural phenomenon with the whitened remains of threes here and there and hardened lava everywhere around.

Perched on the rim of Kilauea and looking like a rustic lodge, Volcano House has 35 comfortable rooms and great view of the crater from both the restaurant and the bar. Run by Sheraton for the National Park Services, this is one of the several lodges that have been here since 1846. Its most recent predecessor now is the nearby Volcano Art Center. The food here is famous, using only local products and traditional and healthy recipes, although busloads of tourists come here for lunch. Advanced reservation is essential, especially during an eruption.

The Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii is interesting, weirdly beautiful and most informative. The National Park Services has an excellent visitor’s center and smiling rangers are everywhere.
